Not what I expected! I was on this place many years ago and love this kind of eating. would not come back and not come back! worst escamoles, worst gusanos, no one in restaurant at 15:00 clock and bad service!
We were told about this restaurant by friends whose opinions about it were mostly very positive. The menu 's selection looked very tasty and we decided to give it a try. Just to be clear, we liked the place and were not too disappointed with the...food but it does require some improvements. For instance, classical foods such as mole poblano and sopa azteca did not impress my fellow commensals (this is not a case of not liking foreign cuisine, they are both chilangos and the service was a bit sloppy despite being polite. Chon appears to be well-known to tourists, so it would really benefit if the chef could boost his kitchen skills to really deliver a genuine taste of pre-Columbian delicatessen, something that can appease both the tourist and the native!
I been here couple of times since 1980´s, the place is an old neighbourhood downtown Mexico city, you can see a bunch of stores and other kind of girls selling his love, so do not expect a beutifull area sorrounding. Don Fortino the chef and...owner) attend you in person, interesting guy, for foreigners the food will be great , I mean; eat escalomes, gusanos de maguey, hueva de mosco, chapulines, acociles all mexican folclorick food) are found in here. There are other not that rare: cocodrile, boar, veal, and othe local; since is a place recognized even by Aqui nos toco Vivir or Bizarre foods, is nice to try. Prices are ok little high for mexican average), four courses meal would be in 40 usd beberages try pulque). Regarding tasting and more, some of them are just good, some other not enough, I mean we have a bunch of options in Mexico, so you can compare. If you are a foreigner in Mexico, you should try, best time to attend i think is Saturday, is not that crowded, try to attend with a local one, or ask the taxi driver to pick you up later. Weekdays is overcrowded the area, not the place, but difficult to attend bunch of pickpockets/gangs everywere and more), wear easy , is not the place to ware nice watch or dress. The restaurant crew is just good, alway try to make your visit good, place is traditional old mexican restaurant I mean, do not expect a piano or mariachi band by the place. We always try : escamoles, boar, armadillo, veal and gusanos de maguey. If you want to visit another place nicer and to the south of the city you may try Ex hacienda de tlalpan, you almost find the same food, or some cantinas in downtown. Do not accept Amex, but Visa is ok.
Super.
