The chef has been trotting out the same menu for over two months now which is hardly inspiring. The service is slow, but pleasant enough when it eventually kicks into gear. The ambiance is over-rated and in fact the dining room is quite sparse and uninspiring.
I have been to this restaurant several times over the past few years and noticed little change in the menu. The one dish that I was a huge fan of is no longer on the menu but I'm finding it harder and harder to find something worthy of replacing it.I feel this restaurant needs to reflect the beautiful landscape that it's set in. By that I mean focusing on the local resources available, of which there are many. This restaurant and many other restaurants in the area do not serve lamb yet there are many lamb farms in the area. This is a huge miss in my opinion. Also, more local fish, whatever's swimming in that muddy water. This restaurant has a lot to offer though:-beautiful setting indoors and out-great wine list (albeit a bit biased)-great staff that make you feel specialI just think there needs to be a little more local focused variety.
We had the pleasure of dining in Le Caveau this past winter and had an excellent experience. Recently we took the Wolfville Magic Bus Winery Tour. They suggest a few of the locations along the route to take in a meal as well. We decided to try out the patio at Le Caveau. We arrived just after 2:00 pm when they had switched from the lunch menu to lighter fare for the afternoon. There was still plenty of selection. We ordered the charcuterie platter and the cheese selection to start (there were 4 of us). We followed with the Scallop and Lobster chowder. The presentation was beautiful and everything was delicious. Many of the tables are "community style", when they are busy you may be seated at a table for 8 and be asked if you mind people joining you. Love this idea! We only had an hour for the wine bus stop and we ran over our time. We had a feeling this might happen as we were enjoying ourselves just a little too much! We were more than prepared to grab a taxi to the next stop a few kilometers down the road. We were offered a ride to the next stop by what we assumed was the manager, turns out it was one of the owners! This display of customer service goes above and beyond anything we could have expected. BRAVO!
This is one of the best organized wine yard/restaurant we visited while in Nova Scotia. My wife and I rarely have the same dish so we can share and discuss, but the Lobster and Scallop Chowder that Amanda recommended was something neither of us could resist. One word of warning: The Grand Pre National Historical Site is just over the hill.Visit it first! It's a bit of a walk and a lot harder on a full stomach. (You can also drive.)
We had a little get-away to celebrate my husband's milestone birthday. Stayed at a charming inn next door to the winery where this fine restaurant is located. Walked through the vineyard to go to dinner. Everything was first rate from the greeting when we arrived to the departure after dinner. We enjoyed a celebration glass of bubbly (courtesy of Le Caveau) and then had two appetizers - my husband had a wonderful charcuterie plate (all made in house) and I enjoyed half a dozen oysters with three different mignonettes. Delicious. We had one order of lamb and one of steak and they were again delicious. We are not big dessert eaters and by this point we were full. It was delicious from the amuse bouche to the espresso at the end. Certainly one of the finer restaurants in Nova Scotia. The chef, Jason Lynch, and staff are to be commended.
